British Isles non-survey - England

The Geological Society of London, established in 1807 and the oldest geological society in the world, has published papers presented at its meetings variously as the Transactions (TGS), the Proceedings, the Quarterly Journal of the GS (QJGS) and the Journal of the GS. The Transactions in particular had fine, hand coloured engravings of maps and sections, particularly in the earlier years. They were published intermittently in two series from 1811 to 1856. Full volumes are rare, but occasionally loose figures are found for sale with the volume number and no date. (read more. The QJGS, published 1845 to 1973, continued with colour printing of maps, which appeared periodically, dependent on economic vagaries. The 1850s-1870s and the 1920s-1930s were particularly good periods.
