Sutherland

The Sutherlandshire Gold Diggings, 29th May, 1869 – date on print – in The Illustrated London News. Two engraved views together: Kildnonan Burn, 18x15cm, showing panning and sluicing in the stream and excavations in the terrace gravels; and Baile 'n Oir, Kildonan, 17x23cm, showing the miners camp, translated as 'Town of Gold' ,downstream of a stone arch bridge. The accompanying article describes the occurrence of gold, the history of the discovery and the Duke of Sutherland's licensing arrangements. Informative and in very good condition.
