Meyers Hand-Atlas

Geognostiche Karte der Nord-Americanischen Freistaaten, 1853 (date on map). Approx. scale 1”=200miles (1:20,000,000). Hand coloured engraving, 14.5”x17.5” (36.5cmx45cm). Adjacent Canada (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick) also coloured geologically. Considerable topographic and drainage detail; shows Oregon territory, very early as a record. Slight overall browning typical for age. Clean, bright and in very good condition.

    Map Accompanying Annual Report, 1867. 1”=60miles. Hand coloured, 29”x58”. Cut and mounted on linen to fold between hard book style green cloth covers with gold embossed crest of Land Office. Colouring is mainly administrative showing states and territories, Indian Lands, railways, land office locations and extent of township surveys which makes it historically fascinating. Geologically, coloured dots signal areas of gold, silver, copper, quicksilver, iron, tin, “asphaltum”, coal and oil springs. Minor tears at intersections of folds and wear folds meet margins. Clean and in good condition.

An administrative map emphasizing the new western divisions of the USGS created in 1880. Minor tears at folds along top margin and at two intersections of folds. Mountain ranges depicted by hachures as bead-like chains, in early 19th century manner. In good condition.

      Geological Map of the United States and part of Canada, 1886. 1”=130 miles scale. Colour print, 18”x29.25”. Cut and mounted on linen to fold between light card covers. Signature of previous owner – McKenny Hughes. Trimmed to frame, scale bar pasted on reverse, other annotation, legend and title block with in frame in sea areas. Compiled “for the American Institute of Mining Engineers to illustrate the coloration and nomenclature recommended by the International Geological Congress”. Bright, clean and in good condition.

Soft-cover atlas, 15”x22”, comprising 33 pp text, single-sided printing, and large fold out maps (30”x42”) at various scales, showing geologic units directly below and directly above the Triassic, nationally, and lithostratigraphy within the Triassic on regional maps. Text on heavy gloss paper, the atlas weighs 3.5lb/1.6k. The cover is scuffed and the corners are bumped; otherwise pages and maps are clean and appear little read. Overall in good condition.

Outline boundaries and formation abbreviations in red on grey basemap. On reverse side a detailed description of all formations and full references. The map is in the pocket of Explanatory Text for the Preliminary Geological Map of Connecticut, Bulletin 84, by Rogers,J. Gates, RM, and Rosenfeld, JL, 1959. PB, 64pp. Paper slippage during printing lead to wide or no margins on pp1-3, 58-59 and 62-63, but no loss of text. Otherwise in good condition. References go right back to Silliman, Hitchcock and Dana.

Folded colour print 38”x29.5”. Narrow Lake Traverse occupies the outlet and together with the Bois de Sioux River marks the boundary between Minnesota and the Dakotas. Clean, bright and in very good condition. Reduced to £3 if purchased with maps of North and South Minnesota.

Folded map in pocket of Physiography of the St.Louis Area by NM Fenneman, Bulletin 12 of Illinois State Geological Survey, Urbana. 83pp. includes numerous photographs. Occasional light discrete library stamps, not affecting text. Map is in very fine condition apart from being folded. Text in original red cloth covered boards in very good condition. Not much used.

          Geologic Map of the Indianapolis 1°x2° Quadrangle, Indiana and Illinois, Showing Bedrock and Unconsolidated Deposits, 1961, by Weir, CE and Gray, HH for the Indiana Dept of Conservation with Cooperation of the Illinois State Geological Survey. Scale 1:250,000. Folded colour print, 29”x41.5”. The map also covers Terre Haute and Bloomington. The area is totally covered by drift represented by colour while the underlying bedrock is indicated by patterns. The northeast corner, which is folded to face outwards, is slightly age toned. Otherwise the map is clean, bright and in good condition.

          Geol Survey of Missouri

          Geological maps of Moniteau, Cooper and Marion Counties, 1855. (3 maps) 12”x9.5” and Saint Louis County, 14.5”x12” in First and Second Reports of the Geological Survey of Missouri. Published and bound in one volume. 452pp. The 3 maps are hand coloured folded double pages and the larger map is folding out. Also, 14 engraved plates of landscapes, riverscapes and numerous smaller wood cuts of sections and mine plans. The maps are in very good condition. The text has minor damp stains and very occasional traces of book worm in the bottom margin not into text and long dead. Original black cloth cover boards, corners and top and bottom of spine bumped, hinges worn outside and strengthened inside with new white end papers. The binding is tight and sound. In good condition.

          Map and Sections of the Quad Creek Area, Montana, 1957. Scale 1:6000. Plate 5 from Bull. Geol.Soc.Am. v.68. Folded, colour print, 41”x34”. Covers a small area of complex Precambrian banded metamorphic over highway US12 snakes in dramatic hairpin turns. Map in great detail making fine distinctions in lithology. This reader can imagine an immensely enjoyable walk along the highway inspecting the cuttings and the scenery.

Large paper back folio, 21.75”x 18.5” comprising 24pp of text with figures, 3 maps on the Niagara Quadrangle, 1:125,000 scale and at the folio’s dimensions: Topographic; Areal Geology (solid); Superficial Geology; a 4th fold out Areal Geology at 1:12,000, 49”x21.75” (see image) ; and 3pp of photographs of the Falls, the Gorge and various quarry exposures. On the inside of the front and back covers there is a general introduction to geology and the folio series. The covers and text pages are browned with age. There are marked water stains to the right margin of the front cover and the first five text pages (not affecting text) and slight watermarks to the remaining text and first three maps, again right margin only and not affecting text or drawings. This folio text is in fair to good condition, the maps are in good to very good condition. The photographs are in very good condition. Weighs 2lbs / 900gm in fat mailing tube.

                  Geologic Map of the Beartooth Mountains, Montana, Wyoming, plate 1 of the Geological Society of America Bulletin, vol. 73, 1959. Scale 1:126,720. Folded colour print 36”x50”. Covers area north and northeast of Yellowstone Park. Slight tears at 3 of 18 fold intersections and slight creasing from fold intersections as often happens with large sheets and impatient folders. Bright and clean apart from dusty area on reverse which formed outside of fold. Shows drainage and the few town centres but otherwise absence of contours and roads reduces navigation potential. In very good condition.
